Contemporary art: theory + practice

This is a free* educational opportunity extending the discussion of contemporary art concepts, theories and approaches beyond the gallery and into the classroom and studio. Starting on March 6th, 2008 contemporary art Theory + Practice will begin a new format combining each hour-long lecture and studio session into a one night event. Theory + Practice is offered on the 1st Thursday of every month.

street art: beyond graffiti • march 6 • theory 6:30pm – practice 7:30pm

With strong subversive and activist undercurrents street art includes art interventions, poster art, street installations, and sticker art. We will discuss the origins, artists, and controversy surrounding this growing phenomenon and create environmentally friendly and provocative artworks for display in a legal public venue.

public art: public and environmental art • april 3 • theory 6:30pm – practice 7:30pm

Forecast Public Art based in St. Paul, MN presents on the challenges we face in creating engaging public works of art to activate community spaces. Following the discussion, Forecast will lead participants in planning their own public art project.

performance art: documentation of the ephemeral • may 1 • theory 6:30pm – practice 7:30pm

We will discuss a brief history of performance art and the documentation of temporary, experimental, and performative artwork.  Following the discussion the attendees will develop and present a short performance artwork on site.
