The Rochester Art Center continually strives to engage community members of all ages in the creation, contemplation, and appreciation of the visual arts. As a non-collecting institution, the Art Center focuses it efforts on presenting temporary exhibitions throughout the year featuring established local, national and international artists, as well as emerging artists from diverse backgrounds working in a variety of media.

In 2004, the Rochester Art Center initiated the 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series—an exhibition program dedicated to promising young artists working in the state of Minnesota. Since its inception, the series has reflected shifting trends in contemporary artistic practice and production, and has helped to facilitate the creation of new bodies of work in a variety of media including photography, installation, sound, painting, drawing, sculpture and film. Now entering our fourth year, the 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series continues to support emerging artists and to provide a dedicated forum for the exhibition of exciting new work.

Each exhibition is on view for a period of roughly eight weeks, and includes a full-color fold-out brochure with text content focused on the concepts, history, methodology, and production of the artists work, as well images from the artists portfolio. These extended gallery guides will provide documentation of all of the exhibitions included in the 3rd Floor: Emerging Artist Series, and will aid the artist in developing a portfolio of critical/scholarly writing pertaining to their work. In addition, each artist will deliver an opening-night lecture to discuss his or her concepts and practices.

Applications are accepted from August 15 - September 30, 2008 and are reviewed in October by the Chief Curator and the review panel, composed of working artists, curators, teachers, and arts professionals. From this review, a schedule for the next season of four exhibitions, each roughly seven-weeks long, is determined. Completion of the entire process can take up to two months, with artists being notified by the end of November. Rochester Art Center furnishes publicity, an opening reception, and the printing and mailing of gallery guides for each exhibition.

To fully serve our mission and support artists working within the region, RAC has dedicated an exhibition series to artists who are producing new work that currently reside in any of the eleven counties of Southeastern Minnesota (counties include Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona). This series is designed to focus on emerging, mid-career, or established artists working in the SE Minnesota region. Scheduled to run in the second-floor Accent Gallery, this exhibition program provides audience members with dedicated regional programming. Southeast Minnesota Artists Exhibition Series

Any artist residing in the aforementioned counties is eligible to be considered for the Southeast Minnesota Artists Exhibition Series. RAC selects artists for inclusion based on the review of applications by the Program Director and the revolving SEMAS exhibtion panel. Selection is based on demonstrated quality, innovation, and excellence in the artists’ work. Other criteria include: a compatibility of the artists work to the overall themes and goals of the exhibition series; ability to work within the parameters of the exhibition schedule; the quality of the exhibition proposal; and compatibility of the artists work to the dedicated gallery space.

Applications are accepted from August 15 – September 30, and are reviewed in October by the program director and the SEMAES exhibition committee, composed of curators, arts professionals, and working artists. From this review, artists will be selected for the 2009 exhibition schedule. Completion of the entire process can take up to two months, with artists being notified by the end of November. RAC furnishes publicity, an opening reception, and the printing and mailing of gallery guides for each exhibition.
