Judy Onofrio: Come One, Come All
April 15 – June 4
“I consider myself extremely lucky. Every day, I have the opportunity to construct a world of memory, humor, and stories through my work in the studio. Best of all, I live in that world and invite others in. There is nothing I would rather do and no place I would rather be. My life and art are best when on a continuous roll, including everything I desire-love, happiness, good friends, success, and a working concrete mixer.” Judy Onofrio
This exhibition features recent work by Rochester artist Judy Onofrio, recipient of the prestigious 2005 McKnight Distinguished Artist Award. Inspired by imagery and icons of the circus, Onofrio blends fantasy and reality to seduce spectators into stunning worlds of humor, mystery, and contradiction. Similar to her studio and garden known as “Judyland,” the works in Come One, Come All react and respond to one another creating a distinct and other-worldly environment. While Onofrio bases her work on personal experiences and memories, she invites viewers to invent their own narratives through provocative titles and intriguing characters. To construct the form of her sculptures, Onofrio hand-carves wood or molds fiberglass, then “paints the surface with materials” to create mosaic finishes of ceramic, glass and metal.
