Ceal Floyer: ‘Til I Get It Right

davies printing audio/video gallery
january 19 - march 4, 2007

In this single-piece sound installation, one is first confronted with the achingly melodious voice of a woman repeatedly singing the lyric “So I’ll just keep on... till I get it right.”  It quickly becomes apparent that this phrase, originating from a song written and performed by Tammy Wynette, has been purposely selected, isolated and modified, placed in a perpetual loop.  What at first may register as tenacity and commitment gives way to notions of failure and longing, and the recognition that this unending pursuit will never be resolved.  Perhaps alluding to an artist’s struggle to produce work of recognized importance, this piece is presented in a seemingly empty gallery void of objects, reinforcing the idea of continuous production fueled by dissatisfaction.  Similarly, these concepts address a more universal condition of ongoing attempts to overcome disappointment and to “get it right.”
